About Us

Ngee Ann Polytechnic's Radio Heatwave is Singapore's inaugural campus radio station. Established in 1992, Radio Heatwave is a radio station that broadcasts predominantly in English and Mandarin and has programmes in Malay and Tamil as well. It is the only campus radio station in Singapore that broadcasts in four languages.

The station is spearheaded by a team of final-year students pursuing the Diploma in Mass Communication at Ngee Ann Polytechnic's School of Film and Media Studies. With the advice of the lecturer-in-charge, the team experiences firsthand broadcast management, production and presentation skills, cultivating leadership, innovation and discipline. From 2006, the team will take on more industrial-based projects to hone their skills in the ‘real' environment as part of industrial collaborations.

Besides entertaining with the latest hits, Radio Heatwave broadcasts Public Service Announcements (PSAs), campus news, features, informational programmes which aims to capture the latest in arts, cultural, community and entertainment scene. As the quintessential medium for the various activities held in Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Radio Heatwave also organises campus concerts, outside broadcasts, seminars, forums and other entertainment events.

Presently, Radio Heatwave has an effective reach of about 15,000 students and staff members. The station is equipped with the state-of-the-art digital broadcasting features including the Master Control NT – a premium on-air scheduler and broadcast system – and the Digital Automated Broadcast (DAB) software. The professional dynamic broadcast environment is created to provide a platform for students to hone their production and presentation skills. Some of these DAB programmes are planned to be broadcast over DAB channels under MediaCorp Radio.

Radio Heatwave is also often invited to emcee and spin music at external events such as the annual Ren Ci Vegetarian Food Fiesta (Suntec City) and Singapore Street Festival (Orchard Road) , giving the station a bigger platform to showcase its talents and creativity.

To educate more students about the radio industry and the running of a radio station, Radio Heatwave also organises outreach programmes such as ‘DJ Workshops' and ‘The Radio Experience'. Some of the schools that have benefited from such outreach programmes are Hillgrove Secondary School , Anglo-Chinese Junior College and The Chinese High School.

One of the benchmark events organized by Radio Heatwave, inconjunction with Ngee Ann Polytechnic's Open House is ‘DJ Wannabe competition' – a radio DJ competition for all secondary schools. In 2006, in its fourth year running, the team has introduced the ‘idol' component and modified the competition to ‘Wannabe DJ Idol Competition' . The semi-final of which was held outside the campus for the first time at Takashimaya with first time SMS voting by the public. The competition is enjoying overwhelming response from secondary school students and sponsors. The national radio stations also features the event.

Radio Heatwave will continue to strive to provide compelling content for the Ngee Ann Community at the Polytechnic and seek collaborations with mainstream radio stations both locally and regionally/globally.
